Data governance is an evolving discipline. It embodies a convergence of data policies, business processes, data management, data quality, and risk management on the data holdings of an organization. Effective data governance allows an organisation to positively influence the activities by data stewards and data custodians

Data Governance establishes policies and processes for an enterprise that governs data assets within an organisation. Unlike information systems, data is typically treated as an asset.

Data Governance typically sets up a Data Governance Board to govern data across the enterprise. Data Governance ensures that data has Data Authority and thus can be trusted, establishes Data Ownership to for accountability purposes, sets up Data Standards and Data Quality benchmarks. Data Governance typical sets up a catalog of Data Assets within the organisation.
