The Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) is an RDF standard that actually predates OWL and similar semantic standards by a few years.

  • It’s purpose was to provide a generalized framework for describing taxonomies and categorization ontologies.
  • While it would in time be replaced by RDFS and OWL for most complex modeled objects, for controlled vocabularies (lists of categories) it has proven sufficiently descriptive to become a lingua franca for describing the most common forms of taxonomies.
